History Of The Practice

In 1958, John I. Bowman graduated from the VCU/MCV School of Dentistry in Richmond, Virginia. After a three year tour in the US Army, and three years of oral surgery residency in Richmond, he started a practice in the Princess Anne Plaza area of Virginia Beach. Dr. Bowman partnered with Dr. Edwin D. Joy in the late 1960’s, and the two of them opened a second office in Norfolk at the Depaul Medical Building. Several years later, Dr. Joy left private practice for a career in academics and, in 1972, Dr. Bowman merged his practice with the practice of Dr. Stanley J. Mason. Dr. Mason had graduated from The Ohio State University School of Dentistry in Columbus, Ohio in 1966 and, after a tour with the US Navy at Little Creek, entered the oral surgery residency training program at LSU/Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana. Drs. Bowman and Mason relocated to the Rose Hall Building on Virginia Beach Boulevard, and enjoyed nearly 20 years of practice together until Dr. Bowman retired in 1991. In the Summer of 2006, 15 years later, Dr. Mason sold the practice to Dr. Michael P. Folck II, and the practice name Mid Atlantic Implant & Oral Surgery Center was adopted. After two years of practicing at Rose Hall, the office was moved to it’s present location at The Convergence Center on Bendix Road and, shortly thereafter, Dr. Mason retired in the Fall of 2008. Since then, Dr. Folck has enjoyed the challenges of maintaing a busy solo practice.
